How to Use If-Else Statements and Loops in Python

Python programs often need to make decisions and repeat actions. If-Else statements help your program make decisions, while loops allow you to execute code multiple times. This article explains how to use these fundamental Python concepts with practical examples.

What are If-Else Statements?

     If-Else statements allow a program to make decisions based on conditions. Depending on whether a condition is true or false, Python executes different blocks of code.

Basic Syntax

if condition:

    # Code to execute if condition is true

else:

    # Code to execute if condition is false

Using an If Statement

An if statement executes code only when a condition is true.

 Using If-Else Statements

An if-else statement provides an alternative action when the condition is false.

Using If-Elif-Else Statements

The elif statement allows you to check multiple conditions.

Comparison Operators in Conditions

Python uses comparison operators to evaluate conditions.

Operator

Meaning

==

Equal to

!=

Not equal to

>

Greater than

<

Less than

>=

Greater than or equal to

<=

Less than or equal to

What are Loops?

Loops allow you to repeat a block of code multiple times without writing it repeatedly.

Python provides two main types of loops:

  • For Loop

  • While Loop

Using a For Loop

A for loop repeats code for a specific number of times.

Understanding range()

The range() function generates a sequence of numbers.

Looping Through a List

A for loop can also iterate through items in a list.

Using a While Loop

A while loop continues running as long as a condition remains true.

Using User Input with If-Else

You can combine user input and conditions to create interactive programs.

Using If Statements Inside Loops

Conditions can be used within loops to perform checks during each iteration.

Common Errors

Missing Colon

Incorrect:

age = int(input("Enter your age: "))

if age >= 18

    print("Adult")

Correct:

age = int(input("Enter your age: "))
if age >= 18:
print("Adult")

       If-Else statements allow Python programs to make decisions based on conditions. The if, elif, and else keywords help control program flow depending on different scenarios. Loops, including for and while, make it possible to repeat tasks efficiently without writing duplicate code. Understanding these concepts is essential for creating interactive and dynamic Python programs.
