Welcome to the Power BI program at Team Academy. Before starting your training, it is important to complete a few basic setup steps to ensure a smooth learning experience. This guide will help you prepare your system, install the required software, and get ready for the hands-on sessions.

Why This Setup Is Important

Power BI is a practical, project-based program. Most sessions include live exercises such as data cleaning, dashboard creation, report building, DAX calculations, and publishing reports. Having the correct setup in advance helps you participate without delays.


Minimum System Requirements

To run Power BI Desktop smoothly, we recommend the following:

  1. Operating System - Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)

  2. Processor - Intel i3 / i5 / i7 or equivalent AMD processor

  3. RAM - Minimum 8 GB (16 GB recommended for better performance)

  4. Storage - At least 5 GB free disk space

  5. Internet- Stable broadband connection for downloads, updates, and Power BI Service access

Important Note for Mac Users

Power BI Desktop is officially designed for Windows. If you use a MacBook or iMac, you can still attend training using one of the following options:

  • Install Windows using Boot Camp (Intel Macs)

  • Use Parallels Desktop or other virtualization software

  • Use a Windows desktop/laptop for practice sessions

  • Use Power BI Service in browser for limited functions

For full hands-on learning, Windows is strongly recommended.


Software You Need to Install

Before the first class, please install:

1. Power BI Desktop - This is the main software used for learning dashboards, reports, Power Query, modeling, and DAX.

2. Web Browser - Use the latest version of:

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

3. Microsoft Account -You may need a Microsoft account to sign in and access certain Power BI cloud features.

 

How to Download Power BI Desktop

Follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge

  2. Search for Microsoft Power BI Desktop Download

  3. Open the official Microsoft website

  4. Click Download

How to Install Power BI Desktop

  1. Open the downloaded file

  1. Click Run

  2. Accept the license agreement

  3. Click Next

  4. Choose installation location

  5. Click Install

  6. Wait for completion

  7. Click Finish

Once completed, open Power BI Desktop from your desktop or Start Menu.

 

First-Time Login Setup

When you open Power BI Desktop:

  1. Click Sign In

  1. Enter your Microsoft account email

 

  1. Complete verification if required

  2. Start using Power BI

If you do not have an account, you may create one during the process.


Common Installation Issues & Quick Fixes

  • Installation Not Opening - Run the file as Administrator.

  • Slow Performance - Close background apps and restart system.

  • Sign In Problem - Check internet connection or try browser login first.

  • Windows Blocking Install - Allow the file from Security / SmartScreen settings.

  • Old Version Installed - Uninstall previous version and install latest release.
