Step 1: Check Eligibility
To be eligible for the PMP exam, you need to meet the following criteria:
Education Requirements:
A four-year degree (bachelor’s or global equivalent) and at least 36 months of project management experience with 35 hours of project management education/training.
OR a high school diploma (or global equivalent) and at least 60 months of project management experience with 35 hours of project management education/training.
Project Management Education: You must have completed 35 hours of project management training or education, typically covered in this PMP exam prep course.
Step 3: Complete the PMP Exam Application
Log into PMI: Once you’ve logged into your PMI account, go to the Certification section and select PMP Exam Application.
Fill in Work Experience: You’ll need to detail your project management experience for the last 8 years. Be sure to include:
Project names, durations, roles, responsibilities, and the knowledge areas you were involved in.
You need to showcase experience in leading and directing projects across all five process groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing).
Education & Training: Provide details of the 35 hours of project management education you completed (such as the hours from the course you are taking).
Step 4: Submit the Application
Review the application for accuracy and completeness.
Submit your application for PMI’s review. PMI may take up to 5 business days to process and approve your application.
Step 5: Pay the Exam Fee
After your application is approved, you’ll receive a payment link.
PMI Members: The exam fee for PMI members is typically lower than for non-members.
PMI Member: $405
Non-Member: $555
Pay the fee to schedule your exam.
Step 6: Schedule Your PMP Exam
Once your payment is processed, you can schedule your PMP exam through the Pearson VUE testing system (PMI’s official exam provider).
Choose whether you want to take the exam online (remote proctored) or in-person at a Pearson VUE testing center.
Select your preferred date and time based on available slots.
Step 7: Prepare for the Exam
Use the study materials, practice exams, and review sessions from your training course to prepare for the PMP exam.
Schedule regular study sessions and work on any weak areas before the exam date.
Step 8: Take the Exam
On the day of the exam, ensure you have the necessary identification and are prepared according to PMI’s exam policies.
The PMP exam consists of 180 questions (multiple choice, multiple responses, matching, and hot spot questions) to be completed in 230 minutes.
Step 9: Receive Results
Immediate Results: After completing the exam, you’ll receive a preliminary result. You’ll either pass or fail the exam.
Official Results: PMI will send your official results within 5-10 days after the exam.
Step 10: Maintain Your Certification
After passing, you must earn 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every 3 years to maintain your certification.
PMI offers numerous ways to earn PDUs, such as through courses, webinars, or industry events.
